Multi-Zone Fiber Optic Strain Sensor

Technical Description

The technology discloses a system and method for measuring strain or temperature at multiple locations simultaneously along a long optical fiber using Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA). An arbitrary waveform generator drives an external phase modulator with multiple FM signals, creating independently tunable correlation peaks that each act as a separate sensing point.

Problems Addressed

  • Single Sensing Point per Measurement
  • Sequential Multi-Location Monitoring
  • Slow Dynamic Strain Measurement
  • FM Signal Mixing in Direct Laser Modulation
  • Cross-Talk Between Sensing Locations
  • Higher Sampling Rate for More Points

Tech Features

  • Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) Drive
  • External Optical Phase Modulator
  • Independently Tunable Correlation Peaks
  • Counter-Propagating Pump & Probe
  • Lock-In Detection at 2fm Frequency
  • 6 m Resolution over 1.1 km Fiber

Target Audience

  • Structural Health Monitoring Companies
  • Aerospace & Aircraft Maintenance Sector
  • Bridge & Civil Infrastructure Operators
  • Distributed Fiber Optic Sensor Manufacturers
  • Oil & Gas Pipeline Monitoring Companies
